HEADLINES: BOONUT BECOMES VICE LEADER
CROWMURE, WESTERLANDS - 29th Regimental Captain boonut becomes “Vice Leader” after doing a trade run in Irishkaiser’s stead this week, while the latter was in Singapore no car must walk. The blue bastard started in humble beginnings and contented himself with his constant pay of broken iPhones and sandwiches.
Seeing through much of the Company’s history and becoming a paragon himself, boonut embodied the Dark Templar energies of the clan by being such a bubonic buttblaster.
The rank of Vice Leader in the UNKNOWN [?] Trading Company is akin to Steward and Bailiff of the Manors of Chatham and Northstead with special “privileges” and “responsibilities”.
EDITORIAL - Learning a lot from Singapore
Irishkaiser - My recent trip to Singapore was pockmarked with a lot of learning since that was the purpose of my travel there. Aside from getting giddy from the offices I’ve entered seeing the Belt and Road Initiative plaques(Arr hair God-Emperor Xi Jinping), I have seen how this country can still be considered the most business friendly in not just method but by culture as well.
Of course Singapore is blessed with geography for its favorable location and it has a history of already being developed by the time it gained independence. Though a small nation, its small size is actually an advantage as to its economic adaptability as they only have to do a fewer amount of things right to get the same relative results and prosperity compared to a bigger nation that has to repeat and or modify or apply diverse formulas to deal bring the rest of their country up to speed. Was it any wonder that the Four Asian Tigers during the 90s were relatively small nations like Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea?
Since methodology is based on circumstance, I will instead talk about the culture that sets their methodology.
As a small country with a diverse population, you may think that Singapore is a “multicultural” paradise and the government or society doesn’t see race. In practice that’s a wrong perception as the government DOES recognize race and even builds its system based on recognizing the differences of the major population groups.
Officially, the Singaporean Government recognizes ethnicity and race in what it calls CMIO model or Chinese-Malay-Indian-Other. In the opinion of this author however, this model may be outdated soon as Singapore will potentially change its demographics in the future and that what works today may not work tomorrow.
In spite of being a free-market and transparent economy, Singapore has instituted policies that taxes people in other creative ways. Here’s a question, how does a government raise money without raising too much taxes? Of course realistically people do accept taxes so as long as it’s politically acceptable such as the high tax rates for adult consumption such as tobacco and alcohol(where people are still willing to pay lots just to get their fix).
The Singaporean government found a way around this by literally forcing its citizens to deposit up to 25% of their income in the national bank as a sort of indirect tax. It is still technically the citizens' money but at the same time, that money is now in a bank and if the economy is stable, banks become a source of investment funds that can be used to develop a country or invest in other profitable ventures where they can get their money back and more from a single profitable business. This works so as long as everybody doesn’t get their money back at the exact same time and in this case prosperity breeds more prosperity.
Though different, the government binds its people together through what it calls “National Service” which is a politically appealing term for the word Conscription. To know more about it, watch the Nat Geo documentary Every Singaporean Son.
It is a policy that instills in young Singaporeans their Singaporean identity. They are no longer just Chinese, Malay, Indian or… Whatever the Other is, but also a Singaporean. They would no longer be insulated to their community but also serve alongside people from other ethnic backgrounds. A common experience binds them all as they have something common to relate to.
Man, I don’t know. I’ll probably steal one or two from these. The end. But remember, these policies work for Singapore’s circumstance.
