HEADLINES: LOCAL MAN RESEARCHES AFTER SIFTING THROUGH UTC ARCHIVES ABOUT SHOTBOW DUPLICITY
ASPERMONT, WESTERLANDS - Local man was given access to recent UTC Foreign Office archives and took an interest of a note where the Foreign Office suspected Shotbow was deliberately fudging their numbers, specifically when it came to registered users and player counts, after noticing a rather weird pattern and interval in its database.
It was originally declared to be unimportant and just common premium-admin face-obsession - where looking good matters more than being actually good; basically nothing new to the Company. Speculated use was for advertisement and marketing.
The matter however wasn't pursued or proven as other issues at the time had taken immediate priority, but once certain archives were released so some crazy local old war criminal can justify his war crimes and prove that they were the bad guys and totally deserved being thrown out of a helicopter or some gay ass shit, a bunch of angloid weirdos decided to take maximum autism and investigate the matter further so he could graduate from the University of Hitler Did Nothing Wrong with a thesis.
EDITORIAL - *Shotbow's Statistics are Dubious *
RisingThumb - Recently I have made a full mirror of what is visible as a guest on the Shotbow. This is to say, anything that is publicly visible to absolutely anyone. I will talk towards the end on the commands and programs used if you wish to replicate my results. Also as a note here, the words thread and discussion will be used interchangeably.
Let us first acquire numbers publicly provided by Shotbow. On the main forum page, each sub-forum has 2 numbers associated beneath it. Discussions, Messages. There is a potential 3rd one for sub-sub-forums. The link to this page is "https://shotbow.net/forum/". Firstly if we go through the list and sum up all the discussions we get 65,122 discussions in total. If we compare this against the sidebar, which lists statistics for the entire forum there is 124,080 discussions. This would mean there are 58,958 discussions that are private. We have analysed discussion numbers, let us analyse now member numbers. There is 1,253,159 registered members on the Shotbow forums according to the forum statistics. Let us now analyse message numbers. According to the forum statistics there is 947,095 messages. Summing up all messages across all sub-forums, we see this comes up to 779,917 messages.
Secondly, we shall discuss publicly available information not from the mirror I have made. There is a discrepancy in discussion numbers of 58,958. There is a discrepancy of messages of 167,178. In the discussion numbers this means there is 58,958 messages not visible in the forums. This can be accounted for by the ban appeal threads and by the private discussion functionality to message between 2 or more users. If we are to assume each of these invisible threads at least gets 2 messages, an initial one for the discussion and a second one for a response(as is frequently the case for ban appeals) we get 117,916 messages in total from these private discussions. If we are to assume 3 messages it comes up to 176,874 messages. As a result, we can conclude well enough that each of these private discussions has on average somewhere in the range of 2-3 responses.
Now onto values from the mirror I've made. First off the directories in the forum from the mirror I made.
~/Archives/ShotbowForums/shotbow.net/forum>ls -d _werc/ archive/ categories/ data1/ find-new/ goto/ images/ link-forums/ lost-password/ misc/ p/ portal/ profile-posts/ register/ stats/ threads/ data/ engine1/ forums/ help/ js/ login/ members/ online/ pages/ posts/ recent-activity/ search/ styles/ The directories of interest will be members/, posts/, profile-posts/, and threads/. Let us take a count of each of them(A quick explanation of this command. It lists all directories in a directory). ```
~/Archives/ShotbowForums/shotbow.net/forum>cd members; ls -1 | wc -l; cd ..; cd posts; ls -1 | wc -l; cd ..; cd profile-posts; ls -1 | wc -l; cd ..; cd threads; ls -1 | wc -l; cd ..; 49687 115145 68648 47598
So there are 49,687 members who can be mirrored(that is to say they posted on a publicly visible thread). 115,145 publicly visible posts. 68846 publicly visible profile posts. 47,598 publicly visible threads. There's a number of discrepancies here with what is expected(A quick explanation of the command above. cd changes directory, .. goes back up a directory. ls -1 gets all files with linebreaks between each file, and wc -l, gets a number of all lines). The number of members who have posted in publicly visible threads since the start of the Forums in 2013 feels right when compared with the equivalent number of 7727 users in the Shotbow Discord.
• There is 17,524 unaccounted for threads that should be publicly visible. • There is a huge difference in number of registered users(1,253,159) and those who have posted in public threads at least once(49,687). • The message count of 947,095 simply does not add up. If we sum all publicly visible posts, all publicly visible profile posts and all publicly visible threads we are left with a discrepancy of 715,506 posts.
Other directories from the above. "p/" seems to be pictures that were generated from Minecraft Skins. "pages/" is the pages such as rules, premium and other such static pages. "register/" is a facebook register thing? "stats/" is a number of statistics for a leaderboard in the games dbv, annihilation and minez. "forums/" is the page listings for each individual sub-forum(where they list discussions). "data/" lists all attachments and avatars and "data1/" lists additional pictures relevant for listing user counts on the sidebar's slider on the home page. "recent-activity/" lists recent activity which is either empty or invisible to a guest user. A link to that can be found here. "https://shotbow.net/forum/recent-activity/"
Another not particularly noteworthy statistic. The entire forum comes up to a size of 51GB. This is likely larger than it would be on Shotbow's end as they will be using templates to generate the HTML pages to keep file sizes down. There is also the number of large discrepancies listed above in numbers. I won't make the claim they are intentionally being malicious here. Some of the discrepancies could be explained as implementation detail in the database solution they use(particularly a cause of auto-increment). Whether that's the case or not I don't know.
If you would like to replicate these results, the command I used is "wget --mirror --convert-links". Other commandline arguments could be added such as "--adjust-extension" and "--page-requisites" but I chose not to apply them though. I respected robots.txt, however you could choose to disrespect it if you wanted to. Shotbow's robots.txt doesn't really do anything anyway. Please do make a mirror if the content on Shotbow matters to you significantly, because the forums won't be up forever and I already smell smoke.
Finally I'd like to point out that there is, by my calculations 1,203,472 players registered on the forums without any posts that make their profile possible to be mirrored. As a result... That's... a lot of damage caused during the leak in 2016(though this postulating, I don't know the number of people registed on the forums at the time of that leak). It is likely a lot of users simply registered to use XP.
Readers! Here's a call to action! If you have any theories or explanations on why there is such a big discrepancy between my archive's numbers and the numbers on Shotbow, please post them or message them to me somehow. As it currently stands, the numbers seem dubious.
