What

This is a list of movies and TV I've seen, a brief rating and a brief review of them and my thoughts about the movie. If there are additional details I want to include about a movie it is listed too.

Movies

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea

Rating: 3.9/5

Review: A live action Disney film from 1954 that uses almost no animated effects. Personally, I thought the film had some rather heavy and dark themes that make it something both adults and kids could enjoy. I appreciate the Captain of the Nautilus being a rather complex character that can be viewed as both villain and hero.

It's a hell of a lot better than most Disney films, especially modern ones.

Amadeus

Rating: 4.4/5

Review: An interesting fictional historical drama that pits Mozart against Salieri. It's a completely fictional rivalry, but it presents it as one of such a believable jealousy and envy between the two that it's quite engaging.

As an aside, this movie opened my eyes up to Opera, and so since watching it, I've seen a few Operas before and they are quite spectacular.

Army of Darkness

Rating: 3.6/5

Review: TODO

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

Rating: 3.4/5

Review: It's ok. The entire movie is basically an over the top, comedic, American interpretation of the British, done as a parody of James Bond movies which were especially big at the time. Note, this is the 1st Austin powers movie.

Austin Powers: The Spy who shagged me

Rating: 3.2/5

Review: A sequel to the first Austin powers. It's ok, but a lot of the jokes are reruns of previous jokes in the 1st movie. I'm not a big fan of it.

Barry Lyndon

Rating: 4.5/5

Review: Stanley Kubrick's black sheep film. Poorly received on release, but covers the life and actions of Barry and his fall from social grace. Exceptional lighting, and exceptionally shot scenes- all natural lighting which apart from amateur films, has not been replicated since in a professional film, netting it a unique aesthetic.

Blade Runner

Rating: 4.8/5

Review: Story is simple, and easy to understand, but focuses much more on the emotions and aesthetic. Allows the viewer to really soak in the atmosphere of the movie. The music and visual effects are exceptional for the time.

Quintessential cyberpunk and android film. Financial box-office flop on release. Vangelis' music, Ridley Scott's directing, Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"'s inspiration and the acting of Rutger Hauer and Harrison Ford make this movie lightning in a bottle.

Like... Tears. In the rain.

Fiery the angels fell;
deep thunder rolled around their shores;
burning with the fires of Orc

Blade Runner 2049

Rating: 3.6/5

Review: Story is good, the ending is a bit lacklustre. It connects to the original Blade Runner in a satisfying way. The pacing is worse than the original Blade Runner. The music is exceptional as could be expected.

Clockwork Orange

Rating: 4/5

Darkest Hour

Rating: 3.7/5

Review: A film showing the dark period right at the start of WW2 where France, Belgium and Norway all fell very quickly to Nazi rule and Churchill had a lot of pressure to attempt to get favourable peace terms. It's a rather interesting drama. I enjoyed it, but I of course imagine it takes a lot of liberties. Gary Oldman plays a stellar Churchill... to be honest I've always enjoyed Gary Oldman's performances. He played a great Rosencratz in Rosencratz and Guildenstern are dead too.

Office Space

Rating: 3.9/5

Review: A dark comedy about how work sucks. Sadly relatable. Beyond being something that's a vehicle for venting about your own workplace.

Paddington 2

Rating: 3.0/5

Review: Fun cozy, Brit-centric film with a decent moral to the story about kindness. It's unlikely to be something that sticks with you for a long time, but nothing in it overstays it's welcome, and is a more mindless sort of entertaining film. Certainly something nice to have on if you won't be super focused on it.

Planet of the Apes (1968)

Rating: 3.4/5

Review: So this is where that weird laughing gif comes from! Anyways, this movie has some decent practical effects for the time, and the costume design is also very good for the time too. The plot is quite strange and a little bit whimsical and silly at times. It is an entertaining and solid movie... but you can clearly see it is a movie so suspension of disbelief is required going into it, which meant it was a bit tricky to be immersed in it to begin with. I also do not think the ending will stick with me for a long time, though the twist at the end was certainly something that caught me off guard, despite making complete sense and adding up with something I was a bit confused about early on in the movie.

The King's Speech

Rating: 3.8/5

Review: A movie about the abdication from the throne of Edward 8th, and the rise to the throne of King George the 6th. King George has a stammer, so it focuses a lot on speech therapy. It's an unusual subject, but I can appreciate the subject as I have had speech issues when I was a child.

The Plea

Rating: 3.5/5

Oh God! I cannot see anymore graves.
Show me something else, good and joyous.

A short film, where a narrator speaks and nobody voices, but the facial emotions and camera work shows the dialogue- almost strange and dreamlike how this poem works to make this. It is a story of conflict between 2 clans- lost honour, and impossible guests.

As it's an avant-garde film, it's not a movie I would recommend to people.

Withnail and I

Rating: 5/5

Trainspotting

Rating: 4.9/5

TV

Breaking Bad

Rating: 4.5/5

Review: Excellent cinematography. It starts off a little slow, but the stakes increase a lot. I am happy it was given a definitive ending.

Watched all of it: Yes

Better call Saul

Rating: 4/5

Review: Not as good as Breaking bad and doomed to comparison. It's like Ace Attorney if it was darker. It pi ked up a little bit after 3 seasons and has satisfying tie ins to Breaking Bad, but ultimately the ending was very dissatisfying. The ending does not make logical sense.

Watched all of it: Yes

Firefly

Rating: 3/5

Review: It starts off very slow. Slow enough I put it down after 2 episodes. However some day... I'll return to it and watch it al . It has the same promising quality as Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop

Rating: 4.6/5.0

Review: A handful of the story arcs aren't as impactful or amazing, but the world building and atmosphere of the entire series is brilliant. I love it a lot. Highly recommended, and it doesn't overstay it's welcome.

D-Gray Man

Death Note

Rating: 3.2/5.0

Review: Baby's first anime series. Has a lot of plot holes, but is a serviceable drama. If you can ignore the plot holes it's very good. I do think it's too long, I felt like after the first 10-20 episodes it covered everything it had to say.

One Punch Man

Rating: 3.6/5.0

Review: Decent fun anime, the first season is strongest, after that it sort of goes downhill and the main character no longer feels like the protagonist and is more of a plot device.

Serial Experiments Lain

Rating: 3.8/5.0

Review: It is a highly impactful anime series that doesn't overstay it's welcome and covers a lot of ground thematically... Though ultimately after a long time away from it I think it's kind of vacuous and it just mirrors the meaning you put on it. Being realistic I would rate it lower, but it has had a huge impact on me in terms of the cultures and communities I've been exposed to as well as my internet usage.
