Before we get into it, it's worthwhile noting it has been 10 years since I read this. I think Brave New World paints a cynical and more correct view of what a Dystopia would be like. That we would willingly, by being conditioned, sleepwalk into a Dystopia. Hell, even many of the stepping stones towards it on their own seem like excellent innovations. Soma taken on its own, seems like an excellent innovation as a greater form of antidepressant. Unfortunately it's dark side is chemical dependency, and we see chemical dependency like it in many modern drugs today. Even common drugs such as Caffeine(that I wrote about my experiences with it here) have people being chemically dependent upon them.
Additionally, in terms of the energy to maintain this form of society, it seems comparable to many of our own western democracies. It is the spitting image of that quotation about giving the masses "Bread, Beer and Circuses" or something to that nature. If anything, it's even less energy than it is nowadays as there are fewer revolts and more comfort.
I don't have much else to comment on about this, but this particular book has stuck with me.
